A Method to the Madness?
Los Angeles Root member Dan Cotreau is excited to give a brief history of the process and explain his dedication to the method created by Sanford Meisner, an American Actor and acting teacher who developed a form of method acting based on the system of Constantin Stanislavski that is now known as the Meisner Technique.
A main belief is Meisner Technique demystifies the craft of acting and provides solid foundation to any actor, whether lost beginner or experienced veteran. Many Directors have discovered clear and concise ways of communicating with their actors what they want in an effective manner.
Sandy, as he was better known, believed “Acting is living truthfully in imaginary circumstances” and that the belief can be broken down into two areas; Action and Moment. He encouraged listening and working moment to moment off of other actors while trying to accomplish a specific goal.
This workshop will show how you can train to work moment to moment via exercises that can be used in classes or rehearsals. You will then be shown how to analyze a scene to find a strong action that propels you through while working off of a partner. Dan will discuss "Character" and how a Meisner actor attacks the topic much differently than other acting styles. Finally, he will show an example of rehearsing a scene from beginning (learning the words), all the way to the finished product and all that is entailed with the help of special guest actors, Dennis Ambriz and Kelly Cotreau. Dennis is a SAG actor who will be featured in the new movie "Crooked Arrows" and Kelly's stage credits are many and varied at Riverfront Playhouse and Shasta College as well as plays in the Los Angeles area.
The class will include group exercises that give Actor and Director both an opportunity to experience firsthand the process in a fun way.

Dan Cotreau
After graduating from U.C. Davis where he had his first theatrical training and moving to Los Angeles, Dan Cotreau decided to continue studying the craft of acting in a professional program.
He first studied with Clayton Rohner at the Actor’s Barn before discovering the Sandy Meisner approach. Dan studied Meisner Technique for a year with William Alderson before continuing as a student in the intensive two year Meisner program at The Ruskin School of Acting, where he was invited into the Master Class with Anthony Hopkins, best known for his Oscar wining performance in 1991 for "Silence of the Lambs".
After graduation from the prestigious group he had the opportunity to participate in the Practical Aesthetics workshops with both award winning playwright and director David Mamet and award winning actor William H. Macy, best known for his role in the 1996 Oscar winner “Fargo” from the Coen Brothers.
Dan used ideas from both Meisner and Practical Aesthetics techniques when he opened his own school, The New School of Acting, and began teaching classes. In addition he was a founding member of the non-profit theatre company Off Hour Theater Project where he served as Managing Director for three years. During that time he directed and acted in numerous stage productions and now is dedicated to sharing his experience with others.
